The wrap-up meeting Doug McKay, SC Department of Commerce, held with the South
Carolina attendees to BIO 2001 yielded assessment and projection for
the future with two clear observations.
1) South Carolina, with no presence at BIO 2001 (except for Biopure
and Fluor Daniel), has a long way to go to be able to exhibit at BIO 2002 in
Toronto, and
2) It is going to be necessary for SCBA, as the official state
affiliate of BIO, and the South Carolina Department of Commerce to partner with
other South Carolina Biotech interests to produce the funds needed. The
partners could include MUSC, (biomedical Research Foundation), Clemson
University (the facility) in Greenwood, Biopure, Fluor Daniel, Nelson, Mullins,
Riley and Scarborough, LLP law firm, etc. The good news is that SCBA has
arranged for 3 booths to be held for South Carolina to be an exhibitor in
Toronto during June 9-12, 2001. Let's work together with one voice: South
Carolina---to make our vision become reality.
Good News!
The largest technology development in the state (1400 acres near Blythewood)
has been set aside by Secretary Way of the Department of Commerce for what he
calls the "highest of high-tech". This includes biotechnology and
pharmaceutical firms as well as computer/software-based technology
initiatives. The land is near a major source of talent and research, the
University of South Carolina, and will complement the already underway "Green
Diamond" high tech park to be built within the Congaree development in
Columbia.
More Good News!
The Medical University of South Carolina has sold the Pharmaceutical
Development Center, PDC, North Charleston, to a Wilmington, North Carolina,
drug development firm aaiPharma, Inc. MUSC President Dr. Ray Greenberg said
the agreement brings a major international pharmaceutical firm to Charleston.
AAI International will manage the local operation manufacturing some critical
care products that require sterile facilities as well as almost
every type of dosage form in its drug development capability. Additionally,
MUSC students will get new training opportunities within the industry as a
result of this major negotiation.
