Facebook group, RIP Students Who Perished On Oct. 28 2007, already has more than 17,000 members
Randy Covington, Director of the Ifra Newsplex at the University of South Carolina has an interesting post, Tragedy and New Media, noting how citizen journalists on Facebook reported on the recent tragic fire that killed several USC and a Clemson student. Randy notes that the Facebook group, RIP Students Who Perished On Oct. 28 2007, had 11,000 members, and as of the time this is written on 11/4 the group has grown to over 17,000.
The ability of a social network to grow rapidly around an emotional event like a tragic fire is amazing.
