Trade Seminar Series: Temporary Importation with the ATA Carnet
CHARLESTON, SC- ATA Carnet is the international customs document used by U.S. exporters for temporary foreign importation and will be introduced in a workshop presented by the South Carolina World Trade Center and Roanoke Trade at the Department of Commerce in Columbia, SC on Tuesday, March 4, 2008.
The ATA carnet is often referred to as the “Merchandise Passport”, which makes exporting goods to overseas as easy as holding a passport and walking through customs. Commercial samples (CS), professional equipment (PE) as well as goods for exhibitions and fairs (EF) are certified to leave the U.S. for the duration of up to 12 months from the export date. ATA Carnet facilitates the export business by eliminating payment of duties and value-added taxes for theses merchandises on one hand and by avoiding extensive customs procedures and paperwork on the other. The application is a simple as filling out the ATA Carnet form and sending it along with the export shipment information to one of the Carnet Service Bureaus in order to receive the ATA Carnet and related international documents, such as the carnet bond and insurance for the goods. Used by U.S. exporters for over 40 years the customs document entitles to a unlimited number of exits from and entries into the U.S. and represents a wide range of acceptance in over 75 countries and territories, such as Chile, India and Taiwan.
Roanoke Trade has been a leader in Carnet expertise for over a quarter century and has worked to educate exporters in the use of the ATA Carnet for the past decade. This March’s workshop will give U.S. exporters an idea about the advantages and benefits of using ATA Carnet for exporting in general, as well as how to evaluate and use best the ATA Carnet for their individual export business. The presenter Mavis Walpole of Roanoke Trade has brought her extensive Carnet knowledge to the trade community for over 15 years and has developed educational workshops for U.S. Customs, transportation professionals, and exporters alike.
