ASME short course on Intellectual Property
Short course for engineers and inventors to learn about patents and the patent process. Course outline:
I. PATENTABILITY
Statutory subject matter - Is the invention the type of thing which
can be patented?
The novelty requirement - Is it new?
The non-obviousness requirement - Is the inventive leap "worthy" of a patent?
II. THE USE OF PATENTED INVENTIONS
What does a patent "allow" you to do?
Does a patent authorize the inventor to practice the invention?
The hierarchy of licenses.
III. PROTECTION YOUR INVENTIVE RIGHTS
Who owns an employee's inventions?
Establishing reduction to practice.
IV. U.S. PATENT PROSECUTION
Avoiding the statutory bar.
The "Miranda Rights" of patent prosecution.
IV.MAKING MONEY ON INVENTIONS
Licensing.
Using a patent as a "launching aid" to one's own business.
