Health Sciences South Carolina adds three new employees

COLUMBIA, S.C., August 12, 2008 – Health Sciences South Carolina is pleased to announce the appointments of three employees to its staff. Joining the statewide research collaborative are: Peter Carek, MD, MS, Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC); Janet B. Craig, DHA, MSN, MBA, Clemson University; and Amy Brock Martin, DrPH, MSPH, University of South Carolina (USC). The three have joined the organization in part-time roles to advance its healthcare quality initiatives.

Established in April 2004, Health Sciences South Carolina is composed of six partner institutions: Clemson University, the Medical University of South Carolina, the University of South Carolina, Greenville Hospital System University Medical Center, Palmetto Health, and Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System. It is headquartered in Columbia.

Health Sciences South Carolina CEO and President Jay Moskowitz said the appointments of Carek, Craig, and Brock Martin support the multi-institution approach Health Sciences South Carolina is taking to address the economic, healthcare workforce, and public health issues that face the Palmetto State. “We were established with the idea that close collaboration between the state’s public research entities and its four largest health systems would enable us to more quickly achieve improvements in the state’s economy and its public health. We have implemented close collaboration across our six partners in research via the Centers of Economic Excellence program, and now we’re doing it in our organizational structure.”

Dr. Carek is a member of the faculty of the MUSC Department of Family Medicine. At Health Sciences South Carolina, he will focus on the organization’s statewide healthcare quality and clinical effectiveness initiatives and will take part in leading and advancing the Healthcare Quality Center of Economic Excellence (CoEE).

Craig is on the faculty of the Clemson University School of Nursing where she leads the graduate program track in Nursing Administration and involves Industrial Engineering and Management faculty in teaching Quality Management in Healthcare. As the extramural program officer at Health Sciences South Carolina, she will focus on the interdisciplinary clinical re-engineering, infection control, and medication safety strategic initiatives, an effort that will take quality improvement research to the patient bedside.

Dr. Martin is the deputy director at the South Carolina Rural Health Research Center at the USC Arnold School of Public Health. An epidemiologist, Dr. Martin is an experienced evaluator and researcher who is dedicated to improving the lives of vulnerable populations. In her new role at Health Sciences South Carolina, she will focus on research to improve healthcare quality and clinical effectiveness in rural health settings.
