Join us as women at the top of the corporate ladder share their strategies for success in the corporate world. These women will offer their opinions and experiences on a variety of topics, including networking at the top and surviving corporate mergers and acquisitions. The panelists include:
Janis Emplit
As Denny’s chief operating officer and executive vice president, Janis Emplit is responsible for more than 1,550 company and franchise-owned restaurants across the U.S., as well as human resources and supply chain management. Called a change agent by Denny’s CEO Nelson Marchioli, she has as COO “turned culture around in company stores, improved quality and reduced turnover.”
Kathy McKinney
Kathy McKinney is a shareholder in the law firm of Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd PA. She serves as bond counsel in tax-exempt financings for 501(c)(3) entities and businesses, including many of the state's leading hospitals, both governmental and nonprofits. Her non-health care clients include numerous colleges and universities, community groups, continuing care retirement centers and museums.
Mary Simon
Since 2006, Mary Simon has served as vice president for Milliken & Co.’s Global Airbag Division, Global Purchasing and Logistics. She oversees the general management of transportation and warehousing for Milliken’s logistics worldwide, as well as the procurement management of machinery and equipment, indirect material and non-fiber raw materials.
Pat Fowler
Pat Fowler’s responsibilities as vice president of surgical services include the strategic planning and vision for surgical services for Bon Secours St. Francis Health System and operational and budgetary oversight for the surgical services for their downtown campus. Her key operational functions include leading, organizing, directing, monitoring and evaluating surgical care to insure quality outcomes, safety and customer satisfaction in a cost efficient manner.

Deb Sofield is president of Executive Speech & Presentations Coaching Co., which trains women and men for success in speaking, presentation skills and message development in the U.S. and abroad. Sofield recently won the Order of the Palmetto – the State of South Carolina’s highest honor awarded by the governor. She is president of the board of the Woman’s Campaign School at Yale University and teaches public speaking at several other prestigious universities.
The 2008 Suzanne Thaler Rising Star Award, recognizing an outstanding woman who owns or is employed by a for-profit business in the GSA area, will be presented at this event!
