Green oysters can be good
CHARLESTON, SC (Oct. 6, 2008) – Charleston Women in International Trade (CWIT) is “going green” and raising money for student scholarships at the same time.
The state’s largest organization for women in international trade is hosting an Oyster Roast and Silent Auction on Wednesday, October 8 at the Charleston Harbor Resort. This sold-out event will include the auctioning of over 100 items while attendees feast on fresh oysters, sip delectable cocktails and look out at the sunset from the beautiful Charleston Harbor Resort at Patriots Point. Proceeds from the auction will aid in funding two $3,000 college scholarships that will be awarded at the club’s annual Soiree.
CWIT will be joining the more than ten Charleston business and organizations to join the S.C. State Ports Authority’s “Pledge for Growth,” recycling 100% of the oyster shells from the event. SCDNR, through their South Carolina Oyster Restoration and Enhancement (SCORE) program, will utilize the shells in the restoration of oyster reefs in and around Charleston Harbor. The Charleston Harbor Resort has agreed to hold the shells overnight in order to allow the recycling to take place.
The Ports Authority is funding $1 million for an ongoing project with SCORE to restore and enhance more than five miles of self-sustaining oyster reefs in the Charleston area. Due to the availability of shells, the planting for the port's project will occur over a five-year period and began this summer.
Information about next week’s Oyster Roast and other great networking opportunities is available on the web at www.cwitsc.org/social.asp.
