Dowell Named Senior Vice Chancellor For Academic Affairs At USC Upstate
Spartanburg, S.C. – Dr. Marsha Dowell has been named senior vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of South Carolina Upstate effective December 8. Dowell, who is the current dean of the Mary Black School of Nursing at USC Upstate, has been serving in this capacity on an interim basis since January. She will continue to serve as dean of the nursing school until a successor is named.
Dr. John Stockwell, chancellor of USC Upstate, believes that Dowell is well-positioned for great success as the University's chief academic officer due to her competitive credentials, experience, and deep reservoirs of well-earned respect both on and off campus.
“Dr. Dowell has performed with remarkable effectiveness in her recent role as interim senior vice chancellor for academic affairs and has done so through some of the most difficult decision processes that a chief academic officer can be called upon to manage,” said Stockwell. “She shares a keen understanding of the mission of the University and an ambition for its vision to emerge as one of the leading metropolitan universities in the Southeast. Dr. Dowell has demonstrated great capacity to lead and manage in the areas of greatest importance to our mission: academic excellence, enrollment growth planning, strategic academic planning, student success initiatives, curriculum development, personnel evaluation, organizational realignment, budget management, revenue enhancement, and partnerships with other colleges and schools and the public sector.”
Dowell has been with USC Upstate since July 2005. She earned a Ph.D. in Nursing Administration with a concentration in health policy from George Mason University, a Master’s of Science in Nursing from the University of Virginia and a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing from Mount Mercy College. Dowell is a member of the Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System Board of Trustees.
