Call for Paper to Green Engineering and Environmental Stewardship Symposium at MSandT 09

Please consider submitting an abstract to the Green Engineering and Environmental Stewardship Symposium organized as a part of MS&T 09, held at Pittsburgh, PA October 25-29th, 2009.  Brief abstracts are due March 15th.  For more information or to upload an abstract, please see http://matscitech.org/

Below are the details on the Green Engineering and Environmental Stewardship Symposium:

Sustainable development is globally recognized as a key issue for future society. Therefore, “green” or environmentally benign technology should be a focus for materials scientists and engineers.

Generally two issues are substantially important; one is to avoid unnecessary use and generation of compounds directly hazardous to human health and the environment, such as heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants. The other is to protect the global environment by preserving energy and conserving natural resources during production. The volumes of raw materials consumed, energy used (or emitted carbon dioxide), and disposed wastes are indicative of sustainability of the process.

Keeping these two aspects in view, this symposium deals with a variety of green technologies related with materials research, manufacturing and processing, that are feasible in the industry. Topics to be discussed in this symposium include environmental impact of materials products and processes; development of alternative technologies; innovative applications of recycled materials; waste minimization technologies; and instrumentation development.

Topics will also include the identification of green opportunities and/or up-front solutions to environmental problems in these or related processes as well as recent initiatives and developments for education in “green engineering.”

Topic areas include:
Environmental impact of materials products and processes;
Alternative manufacturing processes with lower environmental burden;
Nanotechnology for environmental remediation and protection;
Innovative recycling and reuse of metals, ceramics and polymers;
Waste minimization technologies;
Education in green engineering;
Environmental monitoring and testing
