Conference Explores Costs, Benefits, Stimulus Funds for Building Green

Greenville, SC, April 13, 2009 -- The South Carolina Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC-SC) announces its first statewide conference and expo, Sustain SC 2009. Taking place at the Carolina First Center in Greenville on May 7 & 8, 2009, Sustain SC will focus on educating, training and preparing South Carolina businesses and citizens to build more sustainable communities throughout our state. The conference features nationally recognized keynote speakers, over a dozen educational sessions, workshops, building tours and an exposition hall featuring more than fifty green building vendors, and is open to USGBC-SC Chapter members and nonmembers for nominal attendance rates.

During the two-day conference and expo, attendees will learn how the recently passed federal stimulus package will benefit green building in our state, about current and pending green building legislation, emerging green jobs and business opportunities, the LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) rating system, and what products and services are available to this emerging market. Attendees will include building, design and construction professionals, as well as academia, government officials, nonprofits, utility providers, and financiers.

Conference keynote speaker Bill Reed, AIA, LEED AP, will discuss whole-systems integrative design, and keynote Roger Limoges will focus on public policies that promote sustainable communities. Conference Chair John Hansen notes that “the messages of our keynote speakers, if implemented locally, have the potential to propel South Carolina forward in the green building movement; one that will create new jobs, better utilize our local resources, and create a healthier environment for future generations.”
