TechReadySC Receives $250,000 Grant from AdvanceSC
AdvanceSC has provided a $250,000 grant to TechReadySC’ssm Dream It. Do It. Manufacturing Career Campaign to SC Upstate project.
TechReadySCsm is a regional collaboration of five Upstate South Carolina technical and community colleges and the South Carolina Technical College System office. The colleges include Greenville Technical College, Piedmont Technical College, Spartanburg Community College, Tri-County Technical College and York Technical College.
TechReadySC’ssm core mission is to build a more competitive workforce in the Upstate by providing innovative services to meet the economy's existing and emerging human performance needs. The first major charge for the collaboration was to develop a standardized curriculum among the five Upstate partner colleges leading to specialty certificates and an associate’s degree in the area of mechatronics technology. Since the launch of the new curriculum program in Fall 2008, enrollment has been very successful across the five colleges.
The National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) and the Manufacturing Institute developed the Dream It. Do It. Manufacturing Career Campaign in response to human capital challenges such as shortages of qualified employees including skilled production workers, retirement of baby boomers, and global competition, Dream It. Do It. fosters growth, innovation and by building regional alliances and providing youth-oriented awareness and education initiatives designed to captivate and prepare the next generation of skilled American manufacturing talent.
“TechReadySCsm is excited about the Dream It. Do It. campaign and the opportunity to align with education, workforce development and economic groups to bring a greater awareness of careers in manufacturing,” said Cynthia Eason, vice president of economic development for Greenville Technical College and chair of the TechReadySCsm board of directors. “Attracting young people to a career in manufacturing is vital to the continued prosperity of this important economic sector in the Upstate”.
“The South Carolina Manufacturers Alliance is excited to partner with TechReadySCsm to create the Dream It. Do It. initiative for the Upstate of South Carolina,” said Lewis Gossett, President and CEO of the S.C. Manufacturers Alliance, the only statewide organization dedicated exclusively to the interests of manufacturers. “It is more important than ever for South Carolina to position itself as competitive in the global marketplace. Having a qualified and skilled workforce is the backbone for economic prosperity, and it is our mission through Dream It. Do It. to communicate to young people the rewarding and broad range of career opportunities available to them in manufacturing.”
"The board of AdvanceSC receives many applications from worthy organizations on a quarterly basis," said Carol Burdette, president of AdvanceSC. "TechReadySC’ssm Dream It. Do It. campaign shares the goals Duke Energy used in establishing our organization, and we’re privileged to partner with them in order to benefit so many people in our community.”
AdvanceSC supports education, economic growth, and existing manufacturing and public assistance agencies in Duke Energy’s South Carolina service area. Established as a limited liability company by Duke Energy in 2004, AdvanceSC is funded with profits from the company's BPM program and is managed by a board of Upstate SC leaders. The fund administrator is Wachovia Charitable Services, Greenville, S.C.
