Space Still Available for Greenwood Camp Success
Piedmont Technical College is still registering rising middle school students for its Engineering & Industrial Technology Camp Success. Co-hosted by the Silver Crescent Foundation,
Camp Success is a fun and engaging program that helps young people explore how science and math make the world a better place to live.
During the week-long camp, which runs July 12 -17 at Piedmont Tech’s Multipurpose Building (620 N. Emerald Rd.), campers will participate in a number of fun activities and games where they will test their creative skills and discover ways to make technology work for them in the design of new products much like engineers and designers do in the real world every day. From wacky design contests to team building exercises to answering those lingering questions of “when will I ever use math (or science) in real life,” the campers will gain exposure to how companies use creativity, innovative thinking and problem-solving skills to develop solutions to issues we as consumers face every day – from longer lasting tires, to faster computers, and even better tasting food.
According to Camp Director Beth Towles, students will get to experience the fun side of science and math without the burden of homework and tests. “We have a number of exciting Discovery Workshops planned where the campers will actually program and compete with SumoBots, use alternative energy sources to race MouseTrap cars, and make plastic rockets to experiment with hydraulics and pneumatics.”
The camp opens on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 pm with a brief orientation for campers and parents and includes an Ice Cream Sundae exercise where the campers will work together to experience the various parts to building the sundaes – from taking orders, to making sure the ingredients pass “quality control” elements and ensuring the “customer” is satisfied with the final product. “It’s a great way to show the kids how things work in the real world,” explains Camp Success founder Tony Smith.
The campers return daily Monday through Thursday from 8:30 am until 4:00 pm, for a day filled with fun and educational games and activities. Then on Friday, camp activities continue until 12:30 pm at which point the campers will enjoy a fun closing party until 2:30 pm. All campers receive certificates of achievement and the parents are included in the final ceremony.
“Camp Success provides an up-close and personal look at how science and math translate into engineering innovation and technology breakthroughs that enhance every day life,” said Karen Owens, President of the Silver Crescent Foundation. “Through the exciting activities and fun projects planned, we hope to demonstrate to these young students how they can use their brain power to make a difference in people’s lives.”
Parents of rising sixth, seventh and eighth grade students interested in attending the Greenwood Camp Success are encouraged to view the Camp Success video online at www.silvercrescentsc.org/camp.asp .
To register, call Vicki Baldwin at 864-941-8602. The cost to attend Engineering & Industrial Technology Camp Success is $75 which will cover the cost of materials, lunch, snacks and field trips.
