ABC of the Carolinas-Upstate SC Council Announces Call for Entries in 2009 Excellence in Construction Awards

Greenville, SC — The Upstate Council of the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) of the Carolinas announces a call for entries for the organization’s 2009 Excellence in Construction Awards competition. For Upstate construction-related companies, this awards program is one of only a few highly esteemed project recognition programs available that is specifically devoted to our region. To be eligible, projects must be completed during the 12-month period of September 1, 2008, and August 31, 2009.

“We encourage both general contractors and specialty contractors in the Upstate to enter their best project(s) and join the ranks of merit shop companies in the Carolinas recognized as ‘the best of the best’ in the construction industry,” noted Bill Caldwell, 2009 chairman for ABC’s Upstate Council and vice president of operations for Spartanburg-based Waldrop Mechanical Services. “There is so much positive exposure that comes with winning an award for your project. Whether in good times or bad, I can’t think of a better way to raise awareness and enhance the image of a construction business than to have your work showcased in publications, websites and other media seen by your clients and prospects,” said Caldwell.

Caldwell continued, “Last year, Upstate SC contractors had a respectable showing among North and South Carolina entrants, taking home a total of four ABC awards for local projects in Greenville, Greer, Clemson and Liberty, and two additional awards for projects built outside the region. This year, we’d like to see even more wins for Upstate contractors! There is no limit on how many entries a company can submit. To help guide those who may not have a lot of experience entering a project, ABC of the Carolinas offers a free training course on how to win an award.”

For the 2009 ABC (of the Carolinas) Excellence in Construction awards, general contractors have six project value ranges to choose from in eight categories —Commercial, Industrial, Churches, Schools, Healthcare, Interior, Renovation/Restoration and Other/Specialty. A first-place “Eagle Award” will be presented in each category. From the group of Eagle Award winners, one company will receive additional recognition as Carolinas Project of the Year. The Free Enterprise Award, also selected from Eagle Award recipients, recognizes the general contractor with the largest percentage of ABC member subcontractors, suppliers and associate members working directly on the project. Up to three projects in each category will be eligible for an Award of Merit. The Carolinas Green Award is new this year.

Specialty contractors choose from four project value ranges in 12 categories —sitework/landscaping, concrete, masonry, structural and miscellaneous metals, woods and plastics, roofing and sheet metal, glass and glazing, finishes, mechanical and plumbing, fire sprinkler, electrical and other. A first-place Eagle Award will be presented in each category, from which a Specialty Contractor of the Year will be honored. Up to three projects in each category will be eligible for an Award of Merit.

Award winners will be recognized at a gala presentation at the Eighth Annual ABC of the Carolinas Excellence In Construction Awards Banquet, scheduled for November 19, 2009 at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro, North Carolina. ABC of the Carolinas’ Excellence in Construction competition is open to all ABC member companies. Joint ventures are eligible if one firm is an ABC member. Entry forms must be received by August 31, 2009, with the formal submissions due at ABC of the Carolinas headquarters in Charlotte no later than September 30, 2009.

Entry forms with detailed instructions and guidelines can be accessed from the home page of ABC of the Carolinas’ website at http://www.abccarolinas.org.
