International Design Structure Matrix (DSM) conference

Dear interested practitioners and researchers on structural complexity management,

This year’s International Design Structure Matrix (DSM) Conference takes place in Greenville, South Carolina, on October 12 and 13, 2009. This is the annual forum to meet people, present novel ideas, and discuss advances in dependency and structure modeling. The Design Structure Matrix (DSM) is an approach to managing complexity by putting the focus on the elements of a complex system and how they are related to each other. The DSM Conference is the venue to learn about DSM and other methodologies that are designed to better manage such complex systems.

We would like to cordially invite you to participate in this year’s conference.

As of September 15, the conference agenda and all relevant information on the conference are available through our conference website:

http://www.dsm-conference.org

We are delighted to present to you the following keynote speakers. Detailed information and abstracts are available at http://www.dsm-conference.org/keynotes2009.html

Dan Braha
The Structure and Dynamics of Complex Engineering Networks
New England Complex Systems Institute & University of Massachusetts Dartmouth

Sean Callahan
Product Information Models to Capture and Manage Complex Product Designs
The Boeing Company

Steven Eppinger
Integrating the Product, Process, and Organization Views of Complex System Development
Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management

As part of the conference, 31 submissions will be presented in two parallel streams. All submissions have gone through a rigid peer review process and will be available along with some software tools in a printed and CD proceedings. A detailed agenda with all speakers is available at http://www.dsm-conference.org/agenda2009.html. The following topics are covered in-depth:

• Complexity
• Applications
• Change Management
• Extending DSM Methodology
• Project Management
• Requirements Management
• Data Input
• Visualization
• Product Development

Furthermore, three tutorials are offered on Sunday, 11 October for a small additional fee. Detailed descriptions of all tutorials are available at http://dsm-conference.org/tutorials2009.html. They are:

Tyson Browning
Introduction to the Design Structure Matrix: Applications to Systems Architecting, Organization Design, Process Analysis, and Project Management
Neeley School of Business, Texas Christian University, Fort Worth, Texas, USA

Mike Danilovic
Information Driven Management
Jönköping International Business School, Jönköping, Sweden

Maik Maurer

As part of the conference, we offer different social events to provide you with the best possibilities to integrate into the DSM Community.

• Extensive breaks and room to discuss and meet fellow researchers and practitioners
• A Get-Together on the day prior to the conference (at your own expenses)
• A conference dinner at Clemson University

We have also extended the tool session to present to you the latest software tools that are available in research or through commercial vendors. This year, we will present:

• ADePT design builder and ADePT design manager by ADePT Management Ltd.
• Complex Problem Solver and Multiplan Professional by Redteam
• DeSIM by the Institute of Industrial Engineering and Ergonomics, RWTH Aachen University
• iPRIME NAVIGATION SYSTEM by iTiD Consulting, Ltd.
• Lattix by Lattix inc.
• Loomeo by Teseon GmbH
• P3 by theEngineering Design Center, University of Cambridge

Please see the conference website for information on registration, to support your travel arrangements, to find accommodations and for relevant information for a visit to South Carolina.
