Silver Crescent Foundation honors founder with new scholarship
The board of directors for the Silver Crescent Foundation honored the organization's founder, Tony Smith, at yesterday's Salute to Manufacturing Awards luncheon in Florence.
The foundation has established a needs-based scholarship program aimed to help young people pursue technical education and training. According to Gary Foster, president of Automation Engineering Corp. and chairman of the Silver Crescent board, $10,000 has been raised to establish the Tony Masters Smith Silver Crescent Scholars Fund.
Smith has devoted his entire career to furthering manufacturing and education in South Carolina. A past dean of continuing education at Greenville Technical College, Smith also worked for many years with the State Technical College System. He also ran TEC Inc. which held national trade shows and educational expositions that promoted technology transfer and automated manufacturing. He later revamped the organization in 2004 to the current Silver Crescent Foundation which focuses on building the state's future workforce pipeline.
