Plans Underway for Carolinas Foothills Heritage Fair

Westminster, SC—Plans are underway for the first-ever Carolinas Foothills Heritage Fair. The event, scheduled for Thursday, October 22 through Sunday, October 25, will be held on grounds behind West-Oak High School in Westminster, South Carolina.

Agriculture and heritage crafts are the focus of the fair. The theme, “What an Old Fashioned Country Fair Should Be” epitomizes the kind of fair experience many people remember from their childhood with exhibits of home-grown vegetables, rides and farm animals. Dedicated to supporting the achievements of farmers, gardeners and homemakers, the fair will provide good old fashioned family entertainment with livestock, gardening displays, exhibits, food, midway rides, music, educational events, heritage crafts and more.

The vision for the event first occurred during a meeting of the West-Oak Young Farmer and Agribusiness Association. “Agriculture is the world’s most important industry,” said Gwen McPhail, a chief organizer of the event. “It’s important for people to understand where their food comes from. The fair will present agriculture in a fun and educational way.”

Special fair events will include a biofuels exhibit and educational trailer; “Tractor Row” (a display of tractor models throughout the years); a water consortium display; a combine simulator and more. Fairgoers can learn why Marsh Tacky horses are an important animal in South Carolina’s history and view livestock such as alpacas, miniature donkeys and horses and the Irish Dexter, America’s smallest breed of cattle.

Artisans demonstrating and selling heritage crafts will include broom making, chair caning, pine needle basket making, tool making, doll making, wood carving, lye soap making, candle making, crocheting and more.

Traditional midway fair rides and entertainment from concerts to square dancing demonstrations will occur throughout the event. Special activities for children include a petting zoo, a trip to the pumpkin patch, pony rides and photos on a Texas Longhorn.

Revenues from the Carolinas Foothills Heritage Fair will support scholarships for West-Oak’s Young Farmer and Agribusiness Association and the Young Farmers of America organization, as well as community organizations such as the Knights of Columbus.

Fair admission prices are $3 for adults and $2 for children or students with school ID. Tickets may be purchased at the gate or in advance at West-Oak High School or at Dad’s & Lad’s in Westminster. To purchase bulk tickets, email info@carolinafoothillsheritagefair.org.
