BERCHTOLD selected to provide equipment for additions to The Johns Hopkins Hospital

BERCHTOLD announced today that The Johns Hopkins Hospital has selected BERCHTOLD Corporation to provide medical equipment for the institution’s two new buildings, the Charlotte Bloomberg Children’s Center Tower and the Sheikh Zayed Cardiovascular and Critical Care Tower.

The medical equipment manufacturer now is a provider in all of the top 10 medical centers listed in U.S. News & World Report”s “Best Hospitals” ranking.

The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore
The two new towers, totaling 1.6 million-square feet, are scheduled to open in 2011.

After speaking with clinicians and surgeons, and working very closely with the surgical services team, BERCHTOLD’s three lighting technologies – LED, HID and halogen – and equipment booms will be incorporated into the two towers that will house BERCHTOLD’s custom-designed operating rooms, pediatric trauma, burn and acute care units, as well as dedicated cardiac and MRI rooms, adult and pediatric emergency departments and diagnostic and radiology centers.

Only BERCHTOLD offers a choice of all three major lighting technologies: HID for maximum performance; LED, which offers energy and maintenance savings; and BRITe, a practical and cost-effective lighting solution.

“It is an honor to supply our high quality lighting products, services and expertise to The Johns Hopkins Hospital,” said BERCHTOLD President Matthew Weismiller. “We look forward to working with them as they expand their facilities to serve patients with state-of-the-art technological capabilities.”

Other hospitals on the magazine’s top 10 list working with BERCHTOLD include Massachusetts General Hospital and Duke University Medical Center.

Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston
BERCHTOLD’s new LED lights were chosen as the surgical light of choice for Massachusetts General’s B3C (Building for the Third Century) project, which will include 28 new operating rooms and is scheduled for completion in 2011.

These new additions will feature four hybrid interventional operating rooms.

According to John Schreiber, senior sales consultant for BERCHTOLD, the hospital was interested in LED technology for many of BC3’s lighting solutions, because of the variety of benefits LED technology provides in hospital settings.

The LED’s green energy and non-heat producing features help to keep the surgeons at a comfortable temperature. Additionally, because they can last up to 25,000 hours, LEDs offer virtually maintenance-free benefits.

Duke University Medical Center, Durham, N.C.
From lights to booms to surgical tables, Duke University Medical Center (DUMC) has used BERCHTOLD equipment in its facilities for the past 12 years and now plans to incorporate a variety of its products – LED surgical lights, TELETOM booms, HD in-light surgical cameras – in DUMC’s renovation addition that includes five new operating rooms – four cardiac and one endovascular hybrid.

Additionally, BERCHTOLD maintains a presence throughout the entire DUMC system, including the emergency room, labor and delivery, eye center and ambulatory surgery center, as well as the research labs, children’s hospital and treatment center at the Harold “Spike” Yoh football complex.

“Being in the America’s top 10 hospitals is a direct reflection of our expertise in medical design and manufacturing, the quality products we provide and our top notch customer service,” said Weismiller “When patients need medical proficiency, they go to the best hospital facilities in the nation – and these hospitals use BERCHTOLD products to serve them.”
