State Extends Network Services Contract with Spirit Telecom

The state of South Carolina has extended its contract with Spirit Telecom for statewide data network services currently provided through the Division of State Information Technology (DSIT).

Spirit, headquartered in Columbia, was under contract with the state to provide the services through July 2010, with an option to extend the term for two years at the discretion of the state.

The extension, to August 2012, enables the state to reduce the cost of its network.

“We are very pleased with the confidence the state has in Spirit Telecom,” says Spirit Telecom CEO Vernon Williams. “We look forward to finding ways our company can continue providing reliable, cost-effective services to state agencies, universities, primary and secondary schools across South Carolina.”

The network enables the state to provide greater network efficiencies and advanced IP services, using Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) technology. MPLS provides a more secure and reliable network and allows access from any location within the state.

Under the extension, Spirit will continue to manage the data network the state uses to connect various agencies around the state and provide voice and Internet services.

Since 1993, it has been providing local voice, long-distance, Internet and data transmissions to business and government agencies in the Southeast and has been operating its own secure and private network since 1994.
