Health Sciences South Carolina Sponsoring Health-Related Economic Development Event March 2 and 3

COLUMBIA, S.C., February 4, 2010 - - The healthcare industry represents a major portion of the U.S. economy. New drugs, treatments, and medical devices offer opportunities for innovation, investments and new companies. Recognizing this, Health Sciences South Carolina and its member organizations are sponsoring HEAL SC, the state’s first-ever biomedical economic development event.

HEAL SC will take place March 2 and 3 at the Hilton Columbia Center. The two-day event will feature national speakers who will share valuable insight into all aspects of entrepreneurship, from ideation to securing investors to business start-up; introduce investment and business start-up opportunities within South Carolina’s biomedical Centers of Economic Excellence (CoEEs), and provide one-on-one networking. There will also be an exclusive “power” networking event Tuesday evening for South Carolina lawmakers, investors, business leaders, researchers, university tech transfer offices, and others interested in entrepreneurship.

Health Sciences South Carolina President and CEO Jay Moskowitz explains that HEAL SC is designed to connect the researchers who are the intellectual and creative engines behind our state’s emerging biomedical industry with investors and business people looking for entrepreneurial opportunities in South Carolina.

“Healthcare is America’s growth industry and a focal point of innovation. South Carolina is right in the thick of it thanks to investment by our state in the Centers of Economic Excellence Program, the collaborative research taking place among the university and health system partners that compose Health Sciences South Carolina, and the support available to start-up companies through SCRA. South Carolina has created ‘the perfect storm’ for biomedical-focused economic development. Our goal with HEAL SC is to bring everyone to the same table.”

HEAL SC is open to anyone interested in biomedical-related entrepreneurial opportunities in South Carolina. Register on-line at www.HealthSciencesSC.org or by contacting Mike Randall at 803.544.4772 or MSRandall@HealthSciencesSC.org. Space is limited to the first 150 participants.
