Coldwell Banker Caine Chairman, Greenville Civic Leader Frank B. Halter Accepts Order of the Palmetto
Highest Level of Civilian Honor Bestowed by S.C. Governor’s Office Recognizes Lifetime Achievement, Service to State
Greenville, S.C. – May 12, 2010 – Today Frank B. Halter, Coldwell Banker Caine’s chairman and renowned Greenville civic leader, accepted the prestigious Order of the Palmetto from the South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford’s office. The award is the highest level of civilian honor bestowed by the Governor’s Office and recognizes lifetime achievement and service to the state.
The Order of the Palmetto was first presented by Governor John C. West in 1971. In 1999, Governor Jim Hodges established a non-partisan panel to oversee and impose a more stringent criteria and nomination process of the award.
After serving in the United States Air Force as a captain, Halter graduated from the University of Georgia, and joined his father-in-law, “Bubber” Caine’s, real estate company in 1953. Under his leadership, the company has grown from one office with 12 employees to an Upstate-wide presence consisting of more than 240 residential and commercial real estate associates and staff.
His notable career accomplishments include developing South Carolina’s first enclosed shopping mall, McAlister Square, in Greenville in the mid-1960s, as well Dutch Square Mall in Columbia and Myrtle Beach Square Mall. He is a member and past director of the South Carolina Association of Realtors, and past president of the Greenville Board of Realtors.
At the civic level, Halter is a past director of the Peace Center for the Performing Arts, as well as a former director of the YMCA in Greenville. He’s held leadership positions with the Greenville Chapter of the Red Cross, the Greenville Rotary Club, Christ Church Episcopal School and the United Way of Greenville County.
Halter has also freely donated his time and energy to Project Host soup kitchen in Greenville. He’s served as trustee and chairman of the Greenville Hospital System Foundation, and is past president and chairman of the Greenville Chamber of Commerce.
Since its inception, only 3,500 people have received South Carolina’s Order of the Palmetto. Some of the more well-known people to have received the award are singer James Brown, author Pat Conroy, tap dancer Clayton "Peg Leg" Bates, and Civil Rights activist Septima Clark. In 1986, Governor Richard Riley awarded one to the "Unknown Confederate Soldier." A host of politicians have also been granted the honor – including several governors.
There aren’t many organizations dedicated to making Greenville a better place, that hasn’t been touched in some way by Frank,” said Mayor Knox White of Greenville. “He defines civic leadership, and his contributions to our area will be felt for generations to come.”
