Funding to Benefit Literacy, Arts in Kershaw County through Central Carolina Community Foundation

Columbia, SC (May 25, 2010) – The Kershaw County Endowment announces donations to the Kershaw County Literacy Association (KCLA) and the Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County. The Kershaw County Endowment operates under the umbrella of the Central Carolina Community Foundation, a nonprofit organization serving 11 counties in the Midlands by helping charitable individuals and businesses meet the needs of our community.

“Both of these deserving programs will help provide depth to the philanthropic endeavors of the Kershaw County Endowment and Central Carolina Community Foundation,” said Polly Lampshire, chair of the Kershaw County Endowment Board.

The funding awarded to the Kershaw County Literacy Association will help start “Read Aloud Kershaw County,” a new initiative of the organization. The plan is to pilot the program with a local elementary school and grow it to include other schools and daycare centers to provide the single most important activity for building the knowledge required for eventual success in reading. Reading aloud to children improves their reading, writing, speaking, listening and, best of all, their attitudes about reading. With the new program, the Kershaw County Literacy Association will be able to help in the development of successful, lifelong readers by encouraging children's love of reading and learning.

The Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County will use the funding for “The Healing Arts Wellness Program.” This program incorporates the arts in a unique fashion to promote, maintain, and/or restore physical, mental and emotional wellness. The program provides facilities, materials and a professionally trained artist/facilitator who uses a variety of media in a reassuring and encouraging environment to promote healing among different populations within the county.

“As the Community Foundation has selected to focus our grantmaking on illiteracy, dropout prevention and homelessness issues, we are thrilled that these organizations speak to those causes,” said Foundation president & CEO JoAnn Turnquist.
