LARRY’S LAST LAUGH:
PUTTING THE “FUN” IN FUNERAL (AND FUNDRAISING)
TO MOVE THE NICK
WHAT: Banking on the notion that funerals bring out the best in Columbians, Larry Hembree is staging a mock funeral event to raise money for the Nickelodeon Theatre’s Capital Campaign to facilitate its move to the Fox Theatre on Main Street in 2011. The choreographed show is full of skits and music by bands such as Total denial and the No Expectations String Band.
Participants are asked to dress in appropriate funeral attire and bring their favorite Southern funeral dishes to share. A Jell-O mold contest will also be held, with the most creative gelatin sculptor receiving a prize of four tickets to a screening of his or her choice. Contest participants need to register by Tuesday, August 3, by calling the Nickelodeon at 803-254-8234.
Guests of honor include Morihiko Nakahara, Patti O’Furniture, Dr. Kevin Lewis and Gerald Floyd, along with guest appearances by the late Dusty Springfield and a full cast of characters.
WHEN: 6-9 p.m., Friday, August 6, and Saturday, August 7. Mourners are encouraged to arrive at 6 p.m. to drown their sorrows at the cash bar, and the celebration of Larry’s life begins at 7 p.m.
COST: $25 for members, $30 for non-members, plus a cash bar and photo opportunities with Larry in his casket for $5. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations from the general public may also be made to the Nickelodeon Capital Campaign at MoveTheNick.org. Tickets are available for purchase at the Nick’s box office at 937 Main Street or online at brownpapertickets.com.
WHERE: CMFA ArtSpace, 914 Pulaski Street
INTERVIEWS: Larry Hembree (and his grieving twin sister alter ego) are available to speak about the funeral and its purpose of raising funds for the Capital Campaign to move the Nick to the Fox Theatre. To arrange an interview, contact Riley Communications at (803) 227-0914 or kwalker@RileyCommunications.com.
DISCLAIMER: Larry is not really dead — just dead serious about moving the Nick. Open only to mourners over the age of 18.
