Upstate Women in Technology Host Networking Social and Raise Money for Women’s Shelter
Greenville, SC (July 28, 2010) – Upstate Women in Technology (UWIT) is a Greenville based organization promoting networking, learning and friendship among women within the Information Technology community. Members consist of women in all areas of IT, including, but not limited to, programming, system administration, support, project management, recruitment, small business ownership, telecommunications, sales, and higher education. For their July meeting they hosted a special luncheon at ITT Tech where they collected donations and money for Greenville’s women’s shelter, Safe Harbor.
As an organization, UWIT provides a social network for women who work in the traditionally male dominated field of technology. “I started UWIT six years ago to provide a place for women in the IT industry to come together and share their thoughts and ideas,” states Jill Rose, UWIT founder. “It has been a wonderful experience to bring this smart and talented group of women together and as the organization has grown we felt it was important to add philanthropy to our overall purpose and mission. It seemed very fitting to choose Greenville’s women’s shelter, Safe Harbor as the focus of our nonprofit initiative” comments Rose.
Members were generous in their giving of both clothing and financial donations. UWIT was able to collect 15 bags of clothing and shoes as well as toiletry supplies. They were also able to raise 165 dollars in their Change for a Change bowls created by UWIT member Laura Bell and her daughter. “Members were so generous and a few asked about volunteering at the shelter” comments Bell. “This is such a powerful and beautiful example of women coming together to help other women.”
