Five Fisher and Phillips Attorneys Named to Best Lawyers in America

COLUMBIA, S.C. (August 5, 2010) – Fisher & Phillips LLP, a national labor and employment law firm, announced that five of its attorneys in the Columbia office have been selected by their peers for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America 2011® (Copyright 2010 by Woodward/White, Inc., of Aiken, S.C.). Michael D. Carrouth, G. Daniel Ellzey, Stephen C. Mitchell, Jonathan P. Pearson and J. Hagood Tighe join 49 Fisher & Phillips attorneys in other offices in the elite listing.

Since its inception in 1983, Best Lawyers has become regarded as the definitive guide to legal excellence. Because Best Lawyers is based on an exhaustive peer-review survey in which more than 39,000 leading attorneys cast almost 3.1 million votes on the legal abilities of other lawyers in their practice areas, and because lawyers are not required or allowed to pay a fee to be listed, inclusion in Best Lawyers is considered a singular honor. Corporate Counsel magazine has called Best Lawyers “the most respected referral list of attorneys in practice.” Attorneys are voted into practice areas entirely as a result of the votes they receive from their peers. The subspecialties listed after their names are based on information from a variety of sources.

Michael D. Carrouth – Mike is a partner in the Columbia office and is certified as a Specialist in Labor Law by the South Carolina Supreme Court. He practices before state and federal courts, the National Labor Relations Board, and state and federal administrative agencies in the areas of union avoidance, union campaigns, labor relations, employment litigation, discrimination cases, non-compete agreements and wrongful discharge cases. Mike was also listed in Chambers USA: America’s Leading Business since 2005 and The Best Lawyers in America since 2007 and South Carolina Super Lawyers since 2008.

He counsels clients on all state and federal employment laws, major staff reductions and facility closures, labor law implications of mergers and acquisitions, OSHA compliance and wage and hour matters. Ellzey litigates cases involving discrimination, wrongful discharge, ERISA, non-compete and other employment-related matters. In the labor area, he advises companies nationwide on union avoidance and proactive employee relations plans. Dan is a certified Specialist in Labor Law by the Supreme Court of South Carolina. He has also been listed in South Carolina Super Lawyers 2009, The Best Lawyers in America since 2006 and Chambers USA: America’s Leading Business Lawyers since 2007.

He has handled administrative charges and lawsuits in state and federal courts involving wrongful discharge, Title VII, ADA, ADEA, ERISA, FMLA, FLSA, employment testing and other types of employee-based claims. In the traditional labor law arena, Steve has represented employers nationwide in assistance with legal issues in helping employers remain non-union, responding to unfair labor practice changes and providing advice regarding collective bargaining issues and arbitration matters.
