In Greenville County, 22 percent of minority children are not ready to read and 30 percent cannot communicate well for first grade (S.C. KidsCount, 2009). In Greenville County, almost 25 percent of high school students drop out of school and 75 percent of dropouts have serious reading problems, traceable to their inability to learn to read in first grade. Ready 4 Reading is working to change those figures by ensuring every child enters school with the skills they need to learn to read.

“This organization has been diligent on focusing on our new Raising A Reader signature program in concert with our community, business, sponsor, donor, and volunteer partners. And with the recent agency designation by the United Ways of Greenville and Pickens Counties, we are poised to accomplish our goal of increasing reading readiness in our children before they enter first grade” said Edward MacMillan, Managing Member, TruePresence. The Raising a Reader program has a new Program Manager, Tina Ashcraft.

About Ready 4 Reading
Ready 4 Reading™, 501 c 3 nonprofit organization, guides underserved parents and caregivers of primarily newborns through 48 month olds to create a love of books, develop readiness for reading, and provide children’s books in homes. Very early literacy is what little ones learn about listening, speaking, reading, and writing from the very youngest ages—beginning at birth. Very early learning experiences with spoken and written language set the stage for newborn to fours to become successful readers and writers. Ideally, these experiences begin at home, from the first week, with mothers, fathers, relatives, or guardians. Ready 4 Reading is located at the University Center, 225 South Pleasantburg Drive, Suite C3. The organization’s offices are across the hallway in Suite B8.
