Community Leaders to Host Literacy Summit - October 16
WHAT: Community leaders are hosting a Literacy Summit to bring citizens together to discuss literacy issues in South Carolina. The Summit will identify problems facing the community, available resources, and possible gaps and overlaps in literacy services. The agenda will include a State of Reading in South Carolina address and guest speakers who represent different aspects of reading advocacy, promotion and training.
WHO: In addition to Central Carolina Community Foundation, members of the Literacy Summit Planning Committee include representatives from multiple public libraries, higher education, government and community programs. This Summit relates to one of Central Carolina Community Foundation’s philanthropic pillars, reducing illiteracy in South Carolina.
WHEN: Saturday, October 16 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
WHERE: Richland County Public Library, 1431 Assembly Street
WHY: The Literacy Summit Planning Committee has articulated a goal that South Carolina will be the most literate state in the United States by 2030. This Summit serves as an opportunity to discuss the causes of illiteracy and the resources available to the community. Organizations like Central Carolina Community Foundation and South Carolina’s public libraries will serve as catalysts to address the issue and build collaboration within communities.
FREE PUBLIC EVENT: This event is open to the public, and interested citizens, parents and teachers are all invited to attend. The Declaration for the Right to Literacy Scroll, which has been traveling around the country as a symbol of the fight against illiteracy, will also be on display at the Summit.
