American Shore and Beach Preservation Association Annual Meeting ASBPA 2010
ASBPA 2010 in Charleston
ASBPA 2010, Celebrating the Diversity of the Coast, convenes in Charleston South Carolina, 12-15 October. Over 200 participants are expected from around the U.S. and abroad. There will be 80 presentations on topics ranging from shore protection and restoration to regional sediment management and coastal policy.
The program will offer practical solutions as well as probing insight with some provocative themes. Dr. Jim Houston (US Army Corps of Engineers - Engineering Research and Development Center, Vicksburg MS) and Professor Robert G. Dean (Emeritus Professor of Coastal Engineering at University of Florida) will discuss whether the rate of sea level rise is increasing based on Gulf Coast tide gauge records. Mike Walther (Coastal Technology Corporation, FL) will review the evolution of shore protection structures, their use and policy, and Dr. Jacqueline Michel (Research Planning Inc, Columbia SC) will discuss the federal response to the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill.
Keynoters will include Carolyn Boltin-Kelly, Deputy Commissioner of SCDHEC, Office of Ocean and Coastal Resources Management, and Dr. Miles O. Hayes, one of the pioneers in coastal geomorphology, who will present “South Carolina-A Coast for all Seasons”. There will also be a pre-conference short course on Sand Resources and Coastal Law, and post-conference field trip to Sullivans Island, Isle of Palms and Dewees Island.
South Carolina epitomizes the “Diversity of the Coast” with its mixed-energy shoreline of beach-ridge barrier islands, massive ebb tidal deltas and huge expanses of salt marsh. In addition to advancing coastal research, South Carolina scientists, engineers, and managers have championed innovative shore protection strategies and progressive coastal zone management, some of which will be on display in Charleston.
Brad Pickel (Beaufort SC) and I are honored to serve as conference co-chairs for ASBPA 2010. We’re involved because ASBPA is such an important voice for coastal zone management. Few organizations bridge so many disciplines and philosophies. ASBPA, for over 80 years, has brought together scientists, engineers, coastal managers, and policy makers with one simple goal––to make the coast sustainable for recreation and development while protecting its natural resources. Please join us in Charleston and help us seek new ways to meet this goal. This will be the first time ASBPA has held its annual meeting in South Carolina. Members of ASBPA include many of the top scientists and engineers in the field of coastal engineering, coastal geology, and coastal zone management.

Sincerely,
Dr. Tim Kana Co-chair ASBPA 2010
