Proterra Inc Selects The Furman Co., Development LLC as Development Consultant for Electric Bus Research and Assembly Plant

Greenville, SC - The Furman Co., Development LLC, has been selected by Proterra Inc. to provide development services for the design, construction and delivery of its new Research and Assembly plant to be located in Technology Neighborhood III of the Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research (CU-ICAR). Furman Development is a division of The Furman Co., Inc, established in 1888 and Greenville’s oldest full service commercial real estate firm.

According to Steve Navarro, President of The Furman Co., Inc. “The Upstate is gaining national recognition as a go-to location for technology and energy based companies.” Seeing the Proterra plant as further affirmation of upstate South Carolina’s place in cutting-edge technology fields Navarro states, “Furman Development’s experience with CU-ICAR and the development of The South Financial Group’s headquarters campus are examples of its philosophy to embrace creativity, transparency, sustainability, and diversity with its’ Corporate Advisory Services platform for the benefit of the community.”

“We are pleased to have the opportunity to provide our brand of sophisticated advisory services to Proterra, which is itself a sophisticated technology-based company” confirms Michael Adamson, Senior Development Manager for Furman Development and Project Director for the Proterra project.

Jeff Granato, President and CEO of Proterra sums up Furman Development’s involvement: “We are delighted to have Furman’s assistance in the complex process of designing a facility to accommodate the research and assembly of our advanced technology clean transportation products. Furman brings deep local relationships and expertise to lead a complex project such as ours. They have been able to make good recommendations on cost control for a project with this many dimensions.”

Proterra Inc was formed in 2004 to design and construct patented clean energy electric transit buses. Seeking a site for its permanent research and assembly facility, Proterra selected Greenville, South Carolina after an extensive nationwide search, in part because of the site’s access to the research and collaboration opportunities available through Clemson University.

Furman Development in its initial efforts on behalf of Proterra has completed competitive identification of best-in-class engineers and designers for civil and geotechnical engineering, architectural services and general contracting services. It is also involved in coordinating the permitting process through the City of Greenville, Greenville County and the State of South Carolina.

The Furman Co., Inc provides extensive resources in not only commercial real estate brokerage and asset management through its affiliation with CB Richard Ellis, Inc, but also in commercial development, risk management, and investment advisory services.
