Central Carolina Community Foundation To Use Knight Foundation Grant to Promote Literacy in South Carolina

Columbia, SC (October 26, 2010) – Central Carolina Community Foundation, a nonprofit organization serving 11 counties in the Midlands by helping charitable individuals and businesses meet the needs of our community, announced they will use funding from The Knight Foundation to focus on promoting literacy in South Carolina and collaborative literacy programs in Richland and Lexington counties. The funding awarded earlier this year from The Knight Foundation totaled $2.5 million. This news comes on the heels of the recent Literacy Summit, an event to educate and inform the public about the state of literacy in South Carolina.

Literacy is one of Central Carolina Community Foundation’s main causes and an area that affects South Carolina. “We are thrilled that the Knight Foundation will be focusing on literacy improvement this year,” says JoAnne Turnquist, Foundation President and CEO. “With their help, and the help of many organizations focused on the goal of Literacy 2030 (by 2030 South Carolina will be the most literate state in the nation), we will make a difference.”
