Ellis Lawhorne's Lay receives national defense attorney award

SAN DIEGO, CA., October 28, 2010 - - Ellis Lawhorne’s John T. Lay, Jr., has been awarded the Fred H. Sievert Award. Presented by DRI, an international organization of defense attorneys, the Fred H. Sievert Award is a national honor given annually to one individual who has made significant contributions to achieving the goals and objectives of the defense bar. The presentation was made at the DRI Annual Meeting, October 20-24, in San Diego.

Lay is a shareholder with Ellis Lawhorne and a member of the Firm’s Litigation and Dispute Resolution Practice Group. He focuses his practice on complex litigation, commercial litigation and product liability, and is very active in national and state professional organizations that support the legal profession. He is the immediate past president and board member of the South Carolina Defense Trial Attorneys’ Association (SCDTAA). Lay is a member of the International Association of Defense Counsel, American Board of Trial Advocates, the Defense Research Institute, and the Association of Defense Trial Attorneys. He also is a fellow in the Litigation Counsel of America.

Lay earned his juris doctor from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1991 and is a member of the South Carolina Bar. He is admitted to try cases in the U.S. District Court of South Carolina, the U.S. Court of Appeals, Fourth Circuit; and the U.S. Supreme Court. He was selected by peer attorneys to the 2011 edition of Best Lawyers in America® in the categories of “Bet the Company” Litigation, Commercial Litigation and Product Liability Litigation, and was recognized as a 2010 South Carolina Super Lawyer. South Carolina Lawyers Weekly also honored Lay with its 2010 Leadership in Law Award.
