Midlands Technical College Commissioner Sercer To Chair Association of Community College Trustees
Dr. Peter E. Sercer, Sr., was elected to chair the national board of the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) in October. He will serve a one-year term as national board chair that will conclude at the October 2011 ACCT Leadership Congress.
Dr. Sercer has served on the Midlands Technical College Commission for more than 20 years, where he provides oversight in strategic planning, budget development, fiscal management, as well as hands-on local, state, and national advocacy for the needs of students, colleges, and communities.
Dr. Sercer retired as a colonel after more than 20 years in the US Air Force, and was formerly director of the Air Force JROTC Program at Irmo High School. He resides in Columbia with his wife, Lesley.
“Community colleges have accomplished extraordinary things in 2010,” said Dr. Sercer. “This year’s ACCT Congress addressed the indispensable role that community colleges are playing in reinvigorating the economy while renewing our commitment to access, excellence, and student success.”
The Association of Community College Trustees is a non-profit educational organization of governing boards representing elected and appointed trustees who govern more than 1,200 community, technical and junior colleges in the US and beyond. ACCT seeks to enhance the ability of community college boards to effectively carry out their roles and responsibilities; supports community college boards in their efforts to govern and develop policies that focus on meeting community needs; builds community college boards’ capacity through education and training programs; and assists community college boards in the recruitment, selection and retention of chief executive officers of the highest caliber.
