USGBC SC Chapter Announces New Board Members

The staff and current board of USGBC SC Chapter are happy to welcome new board members from across the state. “The Chapter is working hard to provide green building education, leadership and advocacy to individuals, businesses and communities throughout South Carolina. By engaging new leaders, we can extend our Chapter’s reach and depth in making our state a healthier, more prosperous and greener place for generations to come,” said John Hansen, 2010 Chair of the South Carolina Chapter.

Jenny Wiedower, SC Chapter Executive Director adds, “Our new board members will add valuable perspectives to USGBC‐SC’s Board and help ensure that the Board embodies the diverse range of talents, experience, and perspectives necessary to lead the transformation of the building industry to sustainability in South Carolina.”

New members include:

Joe Bace, AIA, LEED AP, of Myrtle Beach is the principal of BACE, LLC, Architecture and LEED Consulting. Bace served as Vice Chair for the Chapter’s Grand Strand Provisional Branch in 2010, and has also served on the AIA SC Board (2008‐2010) and currently sits on the Community Appearance Board for the City of Myrtle Beach. Bace received his BA from the New Jersey City University and M. Arch from the New Jersey Institute of Technology.

John Brandon is Business Development and Sustainability Coordinator for GMK and Associates in Columbia. A graduate of The Citadel, he also owns Real Estate Results, LLC. Brandon has been active on USGBC‐SC Chapter’s Green Schools Committee and the Midlands Branch Steering Committee. He is a founding Board Member of Congaree Riverkeeper and serves on the Board of Kanuga Conference Center.

Denise E. Sherman, LEED AP BD+C, returns to the Chapter Board for a second term, originally elected in 2008, from Georgetown. An urban planner by education, Sherman is National Accounts Administrator for Agru America, Inc. She has served USGBC‐SC at both the Branch level (Grand Strand Provisional Branch Chair, 2010) and at the Chapter level (Chair of Education Committee and Chair of Sustain SC Conference and Expo) over the past three years, and is the 2008 recipient of the Keith Sanders Service Award.

Bachman S. Smith IV, Esq is an attorney practicing in the areas of insurance, construction and admiralty law with Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd, PA in Charleston. Smith is an active member of the South Carolina Society, and serves as a Board Member for My Sister’s House and the Southeastern Admiralty Law Institute. Smith received a BA from The University of the South, an MA from The Citadel, and a JD from the University of South Carolina.

Kate Taft, of Greenville, is an Environmental Consultant, with experience in carbon reducing strategies and GHG emission inventories, and specializing in aligning groups working toward a common goal. Taft received a BS from the University of Oregon and a Masters of Environmental Science and Sustainability from California State University, and works locally to promote local food, water and environmental education.

The five new members join a sixteen‐member board that oversees USGBC‐SC Chapter’s finances, governance, policies and practices, regular education and trainings, strategic planning and statewide outreach.
