Remodeling wide open in a tight economy
You might think that one of the worst recessions in decades would mean a standstill for custom homebuilders. According to Bruce Pasquarella, President of American Eagle Builders, you'd be surprised. "We have as much work as we ever have," he explains. "It's just that many of our current projects involve remodeling. In today's economic climate, it just makes sense. Homeowners want to upgrade their homes without the big price tag, and we can keep delivering top-quality work to fit their needs."
During the last several years American Eagle has had the opportunity to explore just how simple - or complicated - remodeling can be. They have completed smaller projects such as adding a screened porch to the back of one home and a two-car garage to another. But they have also finished larger projects such as completely gutting the inside of a home, reframing walls, rebuilding a kitchen and dining room, and adding a sunroom. The most impressive detail of that project? The homeowners were living upstairs the entire time.
Homeowners Sam and Paulette Henry have nothing but happy memories of their remodeling project. "We were a little nervous about trying to stay in our home during such a massive renovation," they said. "But Bruce immediately put us at ease. His subcontractors were all highly professional, and the work area was cleaned up every evening. Bruce even sat down with us from time to time for an update, so we knew exactly how the project was going. He gave us plenty of advance notice when we needed to be out of the home. For example, when the floors needed to be sanded, we just arranged a long weekend trip. We feel like we got a brand new home at a fraction of the cost and with very little interruption of our normal lives."
American Eagle Builders tries to help all of its clients feel this comfortable about remodeling a home. Both Bruce and his architect offer a free consultation, including a walkthrough of the home, recommendations and sketches of the project. Once the blueprints are completed, they schedule appointments for the client to meet with the various vendors to ensure all the budgeted allowances are made accurately. "We've found a lot of benefits going this route," says Bruce. "Homeowners know exactly what they're getting, and the cost ends up being much more accurate, too. We've eliminated any financial surprises."
