Happy Holidays - Thank you for all your leadership - Carpe diem in 2011

We live in a special place. We have our challenges, and goodness knows we are too often our own worst enemy. Take stock of the past decade or so, and it is amazing how far we have come and the possibilities ahead for our community, both locally and globally.

This is one of the most exciting times in human history to be alive. The invention of mass printing was the foundation of broad literacy in the 15th and 16th centuries that fueled the Reformation and the Renaissance, which is the beginning of modern. Before then, people are medieval; after then, they are enlightened like us.

We are living through a time that is defining a new modern. The invention of Internet is the foundation of ubiquitous connectivity which is profoundly redefining who we are. Those we perceive to be our closest peers are as likely to be around the world as they are to be physically next door. Institutions that took centuries to evolve, from countries to companies to universities, are being shaken to their core by organizations from Google, Amazon.com, and Facebook, to Al-Qaeda and Wiki-Leaks, which explode onto scene and scale globally in a matter of months.

Politically we are thrashing about, from a sharp turn to the left to a hard jerk to the right in twenty-four months. Our angst is from the problems we hve coming to terms with the disorienting change we are experiencing. Many of us feel politically homeless. We look around and there seems to be no one politically at any level lighting the path to the future.

The entrepreneur in me sees the churn as containing the seeds of immense possibilities if we have the vision and leadership to realize it. What our community needs most right now is leadership. If not you, who? If not now, when?

If you are reading this, it is because you are one of our leaders who is creating the future to make our community a better place. Thank you for all you do.

I'm taking the holidays off from Swamp Fox to re-entergize for 2011. See you on the other side of the new year.

I hope you and your family have a joyous holiday, and a healthy and prosperous new year.

Carpe Diem

John
