BioEnergy Symposium at UNC Charlotte - Feb. 7-8

BioEnergy Symposium – UNC Charlotte – Feb. 7-8

Current and future applications of Waste to Energy will be topics of the first BioEnergy Symposium from UNC Charlotte’s IDEAS Center on February 7-8. The conference will feature national speakers who delve into the energy, environmental, regulatory, and engineering issues of Waste-To-Energy (WTE). (Registration web address below)

The symposium kicks off with a panel overview of “WTE Among Waste Management Options.” The “Feedstocks” section of the program will cover wood wastes, refuse-derived fuels, bio-solids and co-digestion.

Breakout sessions for the symposium include air, water and regulatory issues; advanced combustion, gasification and anaerobic digestion; and also financial aspects of WTE. Stakeholder relations issues will be addressed in panel discussions about site selection, eco-industrial development, brownfield management and community relations.

An overview of actual WTE applications will show the practical application of technical and regulatory development WTE concepts.

The Symposium will be hosted by UNC Charlotte’s Infrastructure, Design, Environment and Sustainability (IDEAS) Center, directed by Dr. Helene Hilger. She also chairs the national American Society of Civil Engineers' Environmental and Water Resources Institute Sustainability Committee.

Says Hilger, “WTE is a way to make municipal solid waste a resource to serve a growing population. Using this waste as a renewable fuel can divert massive amounts of material resources from landfills and create electricity for its communities. To do this effectively there are regulatory, site selection and technical issues to align.”

The two-day BioEnergy Symposium in Charlotte is February 7-8. The event is at UNC Charlotte, a university that has made significant research and academic commitments to environmental sustainability and energy engineering.
