Cascades Verdae Wins National Senior Housing Design Competition, Hosts 2011 Jury

GREENVILLE, S.C. (January 26, 2011) – Cascades Verdae, a Greenville, S.C.-based retirement community which was selected as a winning entry in the DESIGN/Environments for Aging 2010 competition, recently served as the official host site for the DESIGN 2011 jury.
The national design competition is sponsored by Long-Term Living magazine, The Society for the Advancement of Gerontological Environments (S.A.G.E.), The Center for Health Design and the American Society of Interior Designers.

As a winning submission, Cascades is featured in a special 2010 DESIGN edition of Long-Term Living magazine, and hosted the 2011 jury over a two-day period in early January. The jury is a mixture of long-term care experts, architects, interior designers and senior healthcare administrators who evaluate the senior housing design submissions. At the end of the work sessions, participants selected the winning projects which will be featured in the 2011 DESIGN edition.

Cascades Executive Director Karen Nichols was among those serving on the 2011 jury.

“The process is intense, but incredibly inspirational,” Nichols said. “Not only are we able to evaluate and honor the best of the best; we are able to specifically reward communities which are designed to deliver resident-centered care. It’s exciting to witness this design trend continue to gain popularity and render the institutional nursing homes of old obsolete.”

Cascades was rewarded in the 2010 DESIGN competition for its forward-thinking design. The jurors praised Linville Courts, Cascades’ healthcare services building, for its ability to accommodate a large number of residents in assisted living, memory care and skilled nursing while still providing care in small, household settings.
