COLUMBIA, S.C., February 15, 2011 - - Ellis Lawhorne is pleased to announce that Karen Hudson Thomas, a shareholder in the Firm, has been appointed Chair of the Taxation Law Specialization Advisory Board of the Supreme Court of South Carolina's Commission on Continuing Legal Education and Specialization. The Taxation Law Specialization Advisory Board works to improve and promote the professional development of the state's attorneys in the area of tax law.

Thomas is highly qualified for her new role. A Certified Taxation Specialist and Certified Estate Planning and Probate Specialist, she is a member of the Ellis Lawhorne Trusts and Estates Practice Group. Thomas focuses her practice on complex probate administration and post-death tax planning, working with owners of closely held businesses and large land holdings, farmers, and other wealthy individuals on tax and estate planning, probate matters, tax planning, tax-deferred exchanges of real estate, funding and administering trusts, conservation easements, and establishing private foundations.

Thomas is a graduate of Clemson University. She earned her Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina School of Law, where she received the distinguished Arthur B. Custy Award for Outstanding Tax Student. She also earned an LL.M. (in Taxation) from the New York University School of Law. She is a member of the South Carolina Bar, Richland County Bar Association, and the Taxation Specialization Advisory Board of the South Carolina Bar Commission on Continuing Legal Education and Specialization. She is past chair of the Estate Planning and Probate Law Specialization Advisory Board of the South Carolina Bar Commission on Continuing Legal Education and Specialization and the Columbia Estate Planning Council. Thomas was selected as a Best Lawyer in America (2008-2011) and a South Carolina Super Lawyer (2010).
