SCANPO Honors Harvest Hope with Annual Excellence Award

Greenville, S.C. (April 20, 2011) – The South Carolina Association of Nonprofit Organizations announces Harvest Hope Food Bank and its Chief Executive Officer Denise Holland as the recipient of the Francis Marion Leadership Institute Award for Nonprofit Excellence. The award was presented at SCANPO’s Annual Conference in Myrtle Beach.

Harvest Hope Food Bank is based in Columbia, with offices in Greenville, Florence, and Lexington, and is a regional food distribution organization that provides for the needs of hungry families and children throughout 20 counties in central South Carolina, serving almost half the state. The organization recently expanded its Greenville operations, moving into an 80,000 square foot facility on White Horse Road. The expansion allows Harvest Hope to increase its shipping and receiving operations in Greater Greenville and better serve the area’s residents.

A recent national survey ranked South Carolina number two in the nation in food insecurity. Harvest Hope has seen a 91% increase in demand for food from 2008 to 2010. "To meet these needs, we have been stretched beyond what we could have imagined," noted Holland. "This award is especially significant, it gives us the opportunity to lift up all those in South Carolina's nonprofit sector who are working hard to make strong communities and a stronger state," she said. "I certainly don't operate independently, so for me this is a 'We' award. We never know when our personal situation may change, and we may be the ones in need of food on our plate."

SCANPO’s annual conference brings together more than 400 nonprofit volunteers and leaders from across the state. The winners of SCANPO’s 2011 annual awards exemplify the broad reach and incredible depth of commitment that the state’s nonprofit sector provides our citizens.
