Boeing – SCEG Announcement Underscores Need for Solar Workshop In Columbia, May 3rd

The recent joint project announced by Boeing and SCE&G to install 18,000 solar panels at the new Dreamliner 787 plant in North Charleston is expected to greatly intensify the level of solar activity in SC. This announcement is good timing for John Wiles' upcoming visit on May 3rd to Columbia, SC for his annual workshop: Photovoltaic Power Systems and the National Electrical Code. Wiles is one of the country's leading solar electrical engineers at the Southwest Technology Institute at New Mexico State University. There he conducts testing and research on solar equipment for the Dept. of Energy.

The seminar provides continuing education credit hours for architects, engineers, electricians, municipal code inspectors, and solar installers.

Although some have said that solar energy is not effective in the Southeast, the decision to power an entire airplane manufacturing facility solely by photovoltaic cells confirms that it is a viable source of renewable energy. "From a technical and performance perspective, Photovoltaic (PV) Power Systems work everywhere in the world”, Wiles recently said,”and have been and are being installed in nearly every location including at the South Pole, north of the Arctic Circle and of course in warmer and sunnier climates.  Although the Southeast has fewer bright sunny days than the Southwest, the Southeast has more sunlight than New England or Germany, locations where PV is thriving."
