DayBreak Adult Care Services selects Healthy Learners Midlands for Monthly “Charity Begins at Home” Donation

Lexington, SC – DayBreak Adult Care Services selected Healthy Learners Midlands as the March winner for its “Charity Begins at Home” program.

DayBreak started the monthly charitable donation contest in 2010 as part of its tenth anniversary celebration. Each month, DayBreak donates $500 to a Midlands or Aiken County charity based on nominations received on its website, www.daybreakcare.com. At the end of each month, the votes are tallied, and the charity garnering the most votes receives a $500 contribution. DayBreak lists the winners and a description of their services on its website.

March’s winner, Healthy Learners Midlands, is devoted to removing children’s health barriers to learning with love and compassion. The Midlands program serves 91 schools in four school districts in Richland and Lexington counties. A ministry of the Sisters of Charity Health System, Healthy Learners was formed in 1992 on the premise that children learn better when they are healthy. Currently the five Healthy Learners programs serve 144 schools in ten school districts across South Carolina.

Healthy Learners services include vision care, dental care, hearing evaluations, assistance with prescription medications, clinical counseling and episodic care for other health concerns. Over the years, thousands of children have received health care services statewide and thousands of miles have been traveled while transporting children to their health care appointments.

“We are very grateful to be named the March winner for DayBreak’s Charity Begins at Home program and to receive this donation,” said Cindy Poole, Midlands Coordinator and Assistant Executive Director. “Every day we respond to the health needs of children without adequate resources and provide a safety net for these children who fall through the cracks. We are appreciative of community partners such as DayBreak who help us achieve our mission of removing health barriers to learning.”

Healthy Learners’ program evaluation outcome measures have documented a large number of children with health status improvement, increased self-esteem and improved ability to perform academically in school. Not only have Healthy Learners' children improved their academic performance, the immense health disparities that economically disadvantaged children face are being narrowed.
