Facebook Fostering Philanthropy: Central Carolina Community Foundation Launches Online Contest

COLUMBIA, S.C. (May 9, 2011)—Central Carolina Community Foundation, a nonprofit organization serving 11 counties in the Midlands by helping charitable individuals and businesses meet the needs of our community, is taking its efforts online to spread the word about Talk About Giving, a long-term initiative to encourage families to talk about their own charitable giving and to provide them the tools they need to make philanthropy a part of their value system.

Midlands residents are invited to participate in the Foundation’s weekly Family Fun Friday Giveaway. Each week, a question will be posted to the Talk About Giving Facebook page. Those who follow the page and respond to the question will be eligible to win prizes that the whole family can enjoy including tickets to Riverbanks Zoo, EdVenture, S.C. State Museum and other activities. The winner will be announced each Friday and prizes will be awarded to randomly selected participating fans.

“Research shows that most families place importance on their children developing into charitable adults, but that few actually explain to their children the importance of giving to others,” said JoAnn Turnquist, president and CEO of Central Carolina Community Foundation. “Talk About Giving provides the tools and resources families need to initiate and maintain thoughtful conversations with their children about the value of philanthropy and the spirit of giving. We hope that this contest not only brings more attention to the Talk About Giving program, but that it also creates more opportunities for families to spend time together.”

- A downloadable white paper, which includes facts that indicate the need for the campaign.
- An interactive pledge for families who decide to commit to teaching their children about giving and philanthropy.
- Tools to spark family conversations about giving including the fun and interactive Talk About Giving game, available weekly online or for purchase
