Tapp's Art Center Hosts PIENSA: Art Company Comic Book Release

COLUMBIA, S.C. (June 16, 2011) – Tapp’s Arts Center, Columbia’s center for art and music at 1644 Main Street, will host PIENSA: Art Company’s Heavy Feather Falls comic book release party to benefit the Red Cross Japanese Tsunami Relief Fund at 6:00 p.m. Saturday, June 25.

Heavy Feather Falls, by members of PIENSA: Art Company is a feudal Japanese comic written entirely in haikus by R. Chambers LeHeup and illustrated with a Japanese aesthetic by Sammy Lopez. The comic’s colors and cover are by Dre Lopez.

“The Heavy Feather Falls release party at Tapp’s Arts Center is a great example of what our goals for events at Tapp’s are,” said Brenda Schwarz Miller, Executive Director of Tapp’s Arts Center. “We want Tapp’s to be a center for a variety of art forms and a gathering place for everyone in the heart of the city.”

The event will also feature Columbia artists showing their work, and each artist will show at least one new work dedicated to Japanese history and culture. Artists include: Whitney Lejeune, Michael Krajewski, Maya Smith, Thomas Crouch, Cedric Umoja, Alex Coco, Thomas Hammond, Thomas Jennings, Robbie Amick, Preach Jacobs, Dre Lopez, Sammy Lopez and R. Chambers LeHeup.

The Heavy Feather Falls book release and benefit is open to the public, and tickets are available for $5 at the door or a numbered screen-printed poster by the Half & Half comes with the purchase of a $10 ticket. Music and light refreshments will be provided with a cash bar.
