Palmetto Project Receives Grant from Orangeburg Calhoun Community Foundation

Orangeburg, S.C. (July 11, 2011) — Palmetto Project, a nonprofit organization focused on identifying and combating social and economic challenges in South Carolina through innovative approaches, received an Orangeburg Calhoun Community Foundation grant last fall and has since applied its $1,500 grant to The Carolina Hearing Aid Bank.

The Carolina Hearing Aid Bank, which relies entirely on grants and donations for funding, assists extreme poverty-level clients in purchasing hearing aids for documented hearing loss when no other source of assistance is available. The grant from Orangeburg Calhoun Community Foundation made possible the purchase of four hearing aids for low income Orangeburg and Calhoun County residents.

“Today in South Carolina, programs are available to assist low-income children and those in the work force in obtaining hearing aids,” said Nell Killoy, Carolina Hearing Aid Bank program coordinator. “However, there is no assistance for older adults or for people who are disabled, uninsured or live in poverty. The Carolina Hearing Aid Bank is the only source of help for these otherwise healthy and productive low-income South Carolina residents.”
