Adams Scrap Recycling to Expand in Greenville County

$3.2 million investment expected to create upwards of 50 new jobs

GREENVILLE COUNTY, SC – August 11, 2011 – The Greenville Area Development Corporation, charged with promoting and enhancing quality of life in Greenville County by facilitating job growth and investment, has announced that Adams Scrap Recycling LLC, will expand its operations in Greenville County. The $3.2 million investment is expected to generate 50 new jobs.

A specialist in metal recycling and a major supplier to OmniSource Southeast, a subsidiary of Steel Dynamics Inc., Adams Scrap Recycling plans to purchase property adjacent to the company’s current location on Old Easley Highway, more than doubling the physical footprint of the operation. The company already has added a portable car logger, an Envirorack to dispose of hazardous fluids in vehicles, and trucks and trailers to increase efficiency. The additional property will also add rail access.

“We are truly excited about expanding our recycling operations and offering more services to our customers. South Carolina is not only a manufacturing power house, but a green industry hotspot, and we are proud to be part of that industry. South Carolina and Greenville County have provided an excellent home for our business and we look forward to becoming the Upstate’s leading one-stop recycling facility,” said Rajesh Desor, general manager of Adams Scrap Recycling.

Rodney Adams organized Adams Scrap in October 2009 and Kamal Desor became a partner in the business in January 2011, while general manager Rajesh Desor has worked in the industry since his youth. The Desors see their expanded operations as “a way to help Greenville play its part by reducing waste and educating the community on advancing a culture of recycling, while also providing quality jobs to the community,” added Rajesh Desor.

“Adams Scrap Recycling is a great example of what entrepreneurship can accomplish in our state, and we celebrate the company’s decision to increase its footprint. While we are always working to recruit new business, we celebrate the news when home-grown businesses expand in South Carolina,” said Gov. Nikki Haley.

In South Carolina, Commerce has been involved in recruiting more than $1.7 billion in investment and more than 3,700 jobs in the recycling-related sector since 2008. Commerce supports recycling start-ups and offers numerous industry resources.

“Our state’s recycling industry is really taking off. Adams Scrap Recycling’s growth will certainly help increase our reputation in this green industry,” said Bobby Hitt, Secretary of Commerce.

Metal recyclers in the United States process approximately 120 million tons of various metals each year, generating an industry estimated at more than $60 billion in the United States alone.

While Adams has been a major recycler of all sorts of metals and metal products, the company is seeking to diversify and grow its recycling of glass, paper, plastics and electronics with the expansion.

"The expansion of Adams Scrap Recycling contributes greatly to our county and state by helping to maintain the beauty and environmental balance of our community, and will create additional jobs for Upstate citizens,” said Butch Kirven, GADC Board member and chairman of Greenville County Council. “We welcome this announcement as a sign of improving economic conditions in this area, are pleased at the success of the company, and happy to have been able to assist them in making this expansion possible.”

The company will begin hiring for several positions immediately.
