Governor’s School for Science and Math Receives Award of Excellence

The South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) is the proud recipient of the 2010-11 Award of Excellence for Exemplary Display of Sportsmanship, Ethics and Integrity. This award recognizes the hard work of the GSSM director of athletics, Tully Pate, his volunteer staff and student athletes. One school in each region of the Palmetto state is awarded this honor annually.

Pate dedicates his time and effort to the athletic program at GSSM, where he manages the overall development and organization of 13 varsity sports teams. He centers his coaching philosophy on teaching life skills through athletics. This recognition celebrates the effectiveness of his approach and demonstrates that GSSM athletes are learning the basics of positive and honest competition.

A graduate of Coker College, Pate received his B.S. in business administration with an emphasis in accounting. Along with his position at GSSM, he is a financial investment advisor and worked previously as a volunteer college basketball coach.

“GSSM is nationally known for its outstanding academics, but the students’ accomplishments go far beyond the classroom to create a holistic experience,” said Pate. “Our students are learning many life lessons through their athletic experience at GSSM. These lessons include communication, confidence, respect, responsibility and balance. This statewide recognition is a testament to our students’ successes as well as those of our administrators and coaching staff. I would like to express my gratitude to everyone who helps to make this possible.”

GSSM offers a full range of fall, winter and spring sports to keep students active and healthy. Varsity and intramural sports are offered at the school. Athletic teams compete in the state’s 1A region and are open to all students with more than 80 percent participation.
