Silicon Valley Documentary to Make South Carolina Premiere at Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics
The student body at the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) will screen the Silicon Valley documentary Something Ventured on Friday, October 21, 2011. Sponsored by GSSM’s new BlueCross BlueShield (BCBS) Economics & Finance Institute, this will be the film’s first showing in the Palmetto State.
Premiering earlier this year at the South by Southwest Film Festival and more recently at the University of California-Berkeley, the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan and the Darden Business School at the University of Virginia, Something Ventured tells the story of the birth of Silicon Valley and the venture capital industry. This groundbreaking documentary is told in first person by the young entrepreneurs and investors who saw opportunities where others did not. The film includes interviews with the founders and initial investors of global companies like Intel, Genentech, Cisco, Apple and many others.
“We often hear that Something Ventured is inspirational and motivational, especially to bright and technology-minded students like those at GSSM,” said Molly Davis, co-executive producer of Something Ventured. “Our film subjects define what it means to be innovative, visionary and fearless—and I hope each of these promising young students carries some of that spirit away with them.”
The BCBS Economics & Finance Institute is helping GSSM students explore science and technology through an entrepreneurial lens, while preparing them to be leaders in the knowledge economy of South Carolina. The curriculum of the new Institute includes an array of innovative classes—such as TechVentures, an entrepreneurship course initially created for engineering students at Stanford University—and new campus-wide activities, such as a hands-on business building exercise originally developed for students at Harvard Business School. The Friday night premiere of Something Ventured is part of an ongoing movie series sponsored by the Institute.
GSSM strives to provide students with opportunities that are unmatched by any other high school in South Carolina. The School has been nationally recognized for its strong mix of intellectual challenges, dedicated teachers, unique research opportunities and overall excellence.
