South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Math Ladies’ Tennis Team Named Lower State Runner-Up
The Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) Lady Eagles tennis team recently advanced to round three of the state playoffs. With a record of 8-3, the team completed its most successful season in history, finishing second in the region.
The Lady Eagles won round one of the playoffs against Johnsonville High School, 4-3, and round two against the Green Sea Floyds, 4-3. Alongside the team’s success this season are a number of individual victories. Both Hannah Kahng of Simpsonville and Surya Veerabagu of Anderson won every match, walking away undefeated. Veerabagu will play in the individual state championship later this week.
“These young ladies came to every match focused and determined to give nothing but their best,” says Anthony Peguese, GSSM tennis coach and residence life coordinator. “It amazes me to see the team transition from academically driven students to competitively motivated athletes, all the while displaying good sportsmanship. I have never seen a team work so well together and support one another like the Lady Eagles have this season. I am proud of the girls’ accomplishments and thrilled to share in this experience. My gratitude goes out to GSSM faculty, staff, parents, administration and, of course, the exceptional Lady Eagles!”
The excellent talent showcased this season, from the tennis team as well as the School’s other varsity sports teams, proves that GSSM students are well-rounded, possessing both academic and athletic skills.
GSSM offers a full range of fall, winter and spring sports to keep students active and healthy. Varsity and intramural sports are offered at the school. Athletic teams compete in the state’s 1A region and are open to all students with more than 80 percent participation.
