Studio 2LR, Inc. Architecture + Interiors Earns AIA South Carolina Merit Award

COLUMBIA, S.C. (November 15, 2011) – Studio 2LR, an architecture and interior design firm with an emphasis on sustainable contemporary design, recently earned a merit award from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) South Carolina chapter for the firm’s work on the mixed-use development at 601 Gervais Street and 1218 Pulaski Street.

Tripp Riley, AIA, vice president of Studio 2lR, accepted the merit award at the AIA South Carolina 2011 Design Awards Dinner.

“This project is an excellent example of what can happen when you explore reuse of an existing building combined with new construction to form a cohesive, functional design,” said Riley.

Studio 2LR joined with the property’s owner and developer to transform the corner at the intersection of Gervais Street and Pulaski Street to a mixed-use development with an existing building, a new building and courtyard space between.

601 Gervais Street, the new construction building, is designed to engage the street level, and provide exterior space on the building’s rooftop. The two-story building is made of brick and metal panels, which were inspired by the industrial past of the Vista.

1218 Pulaski Street, the second building, was once an antique mall with a number of unique design elements. Studio 2LR worked with the tenant OCCO Skin Spa to customize the existing space to meet their needs.

A shared urban courtyard now sits between the two buildings. Plants and trees were placed in raised planters and a custom water feature is the focal point of the space.

Diversified Development, a full-range commercial real estate firm for properties in the Carolinas, developed the award-winning project. “Diversified Development was very pleased to be a part of this unique design and adaptive reuse project,” said Charles Small, president of Diversified Development.

Studio 2LR and the 601 Gervais Street and 1218 Pulaski Street development also recently earned recognition from Historic Columbia Foundation as the organization recognized local preservation projects.
