COLUMBIA, S.C. (January 4, 2012)—The Nickelodeon Theatre, South Carolina’s only non-profit art house theater and a leading voice for theater arts in the Southeast, has elected Representative James Smith and Sam P. Johnson to its Board of Directors. These members will serve one-year terms.
• Representative James Smith – After Smith was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives in 1996, he served until 2005. Smith was re-elected to the House in 2010 and currently serves as 1st Vice Chairman of the Judiciary Committee. Smith maintains his own private law practice and is a Captain and Executive Officer of 1-118th Combined Arms Battalion. He served in support of Operation Enduring Freedom Afghanistan with the 218th Infantry Brigade where he was awarded the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, The Bronze Star and The Purple Heart. Smith also works with several non-profits.
• Sam P. Johnson – Johnson is the Special Assistant to Mayor Steve Benjamin. In the mayor’s office, he is responsible for governmental affairs and the mayor’s projects and initiatives. Prior to entering this post, he worked for former Representative Anton Gunn in the South Carolina House of Representatives. “As we are at the halfway mark of our fundraising goals for the Move the Nick capital campaign and near completion of construction of the first floor of our new theater, these board members both are tied to the community and have talents that will move the Nickelodeon Theatre closer and closer to home on Main Street,” said Andy Smith, Executive Director of the Nickelodeon Theatre.
