The Self Family Foundation invests in STEM education

Clemson, S.C. (February 9, 2012) – South Carolina’s Coalition for Mathematics and Science at Clemson University, is expanding its school-based Biobridge SC initiative to improve teacher instruction and student learning in the life sciences with the assistance of a gift from the Self Family Foundation.

S2TEM Centers SC, a statewide network of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematical (STEM) education specialists, will provide ongoing, on-site support to participating teachers. “Understanding the building blocks of biology is critical to graduation from high school, success in college and access to STEM careers” says Alice Gilchrist, a STEM Education specialist with S2TEM Centers SC (http://www.s2temsc.org/).

Gilchrist adds, “Biobridge SC spans the learning continuum from elementary school science through high school biology. Science teachers from elementary, middle and high schools will focus on teacher instruction and student learning in the life sciences.”

The Self Family Foundation is supporting Biobridge SC at the level of $26,566 for activities to be completed over a three-year period in Greenwood Co. schools. Frank Wideman, president of the Foundation stated “We are please to support this program to improve instruction in the life sciences in our schools. We see this as an investment in the future by helping our students prepare to compete in an increasingly competitive global economy.”
